Montag turns to books to rescue him; instead they help demolish his life -- he loses his wife, job and home; he kills a man and is forced to be a nomad. Does he gain any benefits from books? What is Ray Bradbury trying to say? Maybe we would all be better off if we just burned our books. What do you think?

I don't feel that Montag's life was demolished by books; he didn't have a life before he found them. It seems to me that Montag makes the choice to be a nomad rather than being forced into it. He chose to go against a belief that he felt was fundamentally wrong. He could have made the choice to continue his life as a firefighter, an empty shell, but rather he chose to fight. Montag gains one enormous benefit from books, to think critically. Montag has never really lived before and these books give him a life, they gave him the ability to think and thus they he is living for the first time. I think that Bradbury is saying that a life isn't a life if one gives into being spoon fed. As far as being better off if we burn our books; what is the difference if we are not even reading them?
I agree. The books gave montag life. They didn't take it away. They helped him look at things differently and that is good because it helped him see that even though he thought he was happy he really wasn't. I really liked this book. It made me think about why reading is so important. I think it would be silly to burn books just because you think they might make you sad or something.
Thanks so much for creating this forum to discuss Bradbury's classic. I feel really bad about missing all the discussions that have taken place in Rock Springs and elsewhere, but am glad to have this outlet to share some comments about such a great book. I found Bradbury's commentary on humans quite intriguing given that he was writing over 50 years ago. I took from the characters of Montag and Beatty, a dichotomy that exists in all of us. We, as humans, have the ability to incessantly learn all that we can while we are here on the planet, while also the disability of letting our brains atrophy with mindless tasks. I believe Montag benefitted greatly from books. It was his learning through books in his distant past that allowed him to disavow the logic of Beatty stating that books were empty and meaningless. One caveat though that I think should be brought up is the fact that a book in Bradbury's novel is a printed reproduction of knowledge gained from someone's experience in the world. Now 50 years later, with the advent of computers and the linking of these computers through the internet, we are no longer bound to only the printed page for this sharing of knowledge and information. The zeroes and ones, bits and bytes, and their configuration on microchips have allowed a whole new world to develop where information and knowledge is only one click of a mouse, one Google search, away. At the time Bradbury wrote, the internet wasn't even invented. We can now read our books online, listen to our books on an iPod, watch dramatizations of books on television and film. Burning actual books while distasteful and alarming, would I believe do little to stifle creativity and learning in our world. The electronic format that we have become accustomed to in terms of our information and ideas is I think here to stay. I welcome any comments and would very much like to continue this discussion.
